You're probably familiar with Maynard James Keenan from such bands as Tool and A Perfect Circle. His new project, Puscifer, is a musical, comical, theatrical production. He said that he started the project because "with every breath we should all be creating something."

I've always been a huge fan of musicians who break away from their usual style and do something different. This was no exception - the music and visuals were fantastic and everyone in the audience laughed a lot. I am familiar with Carina Round and found her to be perfect for this act.

The dark lighting during the 2 songs I was approved to shoot posed a bit of a challenge as I do my best to capture facial expressions. Here are my attempts at presenting still images of the show in the artistic fashion it was presented.

A friend introduced me to Carina Round when we were living in Hollywood - I then went to see her every opportunity I could and own a lot of her CDs. She is incredibly talented, hilarious, and has such a beautiful voice. It was so great to see her play in DC - and even cooler when a guy saw me in the lobby and told me the show was great (confession - he may have been a LITTLE drunk), but that's right, folks - I was mistaken for her. And it totally made my day! : )

Clutch Beer Release Show

Clutch has some big fans at New Belgium Brewing Company who actually worked with the band to develop a super tasty treat: Clutch Dark Sour Ale! Those of us who attended the beer release party were also treated to an amazing acoustic set as well as some of the usual Clutch awesomeness.

My apologies for the delay. The photo agreement was very strict and the photos can only appear in the pre-approved publications, so, staying true to my word, I wasn't able to post them on my own as I usually do. I can't yet afford the $10,000 lens I want for the mega-star, across-the-entire-arena shoots, so Pollstar already had a few shots posted that are pretty similar to the ones I was able to capture with my average-sized zoom lens.

Upon finding out that we'd be waiting behind-the-scenes for songs 9 and 10 (which is quite unusual), a fellow photographer/writer (who was also approved to shoot) decided that it was more important for him to watch the entire show so he could do a proper show review. I shared some shots with his paper, so there actually IS a photo out there that I can link to here on the blog (HOORAY!):

I did some promos for these guys back in 2007 and was stoked to have the chance to do some more at their recent DC show at Black Cat. Their sound is strong - and unique. I don't know of anyone who sounds like them right now. Although everyone was in the bar area when they walked out to the stage, the room they played was filled before the end of the first song.

Green Day recognizes their uniqueness and has already taken them out for a European tour. It's about time that the rest of the music industry catches on.

Doukenie "Taste of Greece" Wine Festival

The state of Virginia has wineries... reeeeeeeally good ones! Who knew, right?! This past weekend I was paid with a case of wine (YAY!) to capture some images at one vineyard's "Taste of Greece" festival. It was a beautiful, fun day filled with beautiful scenery, great wine, and even a dog who chases (and eats) bubbles. On the drive from Frederick - through Harper's Ferry - to this vineyard I passed at least 3 others. Definitely a trip worth taking, and I highly recommend including Doukenie!

Blind Boys of Alabama

I randomly met the tour manager of Blind Boys of Alabama years ago when I was out walking my dog in Hollywood. I saw that they were coming through town, so I got in touch with him and he totally hooked me up. He allowed me to do something that is (sadly) very rare these days - I was able to shoot the entire performance from wherever I wanted! : )

Preservation Hall Jazz Band opened the show and completely blew me away. I'm sold. As soon as I get another paycheck I'm buying everything they've ever released. Luckily they joined Blind Boys of Alabama on-stage multiple times, so I was able to get some shots of them all together.

Blind Boys of Alabama perform with such passion and have amazingly, beautiful voices. Although gospel is not anywhere near my usual style I became an instant mega fan. They are an incredible band with an amazing story - and they are SUCH down to earth, sweet guys.

I knew I was in for a good show, but didn't know I was going to experience something so incredibly amazing! Thanks, Chuck!

The original line-up of Scream played the Black Cat on Dec 20. I braved the "Blizzard of '09" to get to this show and it was incredible - even worth the mild concussion from getting kicked in the head by a stage diver.

The production of the Rockettes show was unlike ANYTHING I have EVER seen. The show was beautiful. I wish I could have stayed to see the whole thing.

This was my first chance to use my new camera (Canon 5d Mark II). I'm so in love with it that I'd marry it if I could. : )

Trans-Siberian Orchestra at Verizon Center Dec 9

I had heard a lot about Trans-Siberian Orchestra and had heard one of their Christmas CD's - which we affectionately used to call the "Heavy Metal Christmas" album - so I was super excited to see them live. After shooting the 1st 3 songs I was able to check my cameras and watch the rest of the show with a friend from the 4th row (Thanks, Kaitlin!).

The lighting was unlike any show I'd seen before, the snow falling from the ceiling was awesome, and the musicians were incredible. Anna Phoebe made my friend and I both wish we had learned to play violin so we could be as cool as her, and I still can't get over the fact that Alex Skolnick from Testament (one of my favorite metal bands) was shredding on guitar.

The Miley Cyrus show at Verizon Center was, by far, my most challenging shoot ever. Only 2 photographers were approved and we had to shoot from the soundboard which was at ground-level and at the complete opposite end of the stadium from the stage. The excitement of these young fans seeing one of their idols in person was incredible. The sheer energy in that room could have powered a small city for days.

We had 1 song (about 3 minutes) to capture our images over a sea of wildly waving posters and kids perched on shoulders. Approximately 98% of my shots were obstructed by a head or a black square.

I'm thrilled to have had this opportunity and actually amazed that I managed to get a few decent shots. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Maybe I just need to purchase some KISS-esque platform boots for these situations.

Revival Tour featuring Tim Barry, Jim Ward, Chuck Ragan, Jenny Owen Youngs, etc

This year's Revival tour honestly goes down as one of my all time favorite shows. I've seen many of these performers' bands in the past (bands that I love), but seeing them all just hanging out, having some drinks, taking turns playing individually, then performing together at the end of the night was absolutely incredible.

The show I saw at Sonar on Oct 16 was only the 2nd of the tour. Treat yourself to some beautiful music by going to this show when it hits your town.

I have never been one to watch American Idol aside from the hilarious try-out shows, but I love Kelly Clarkson. Since U Been Gone is the first song of hers I ever heard - and I have never met a person who doesn't (secretly, at least) love to belt this song out as much as I do.

I was thrilled when the staff gave me a ticket so I could stick around to watch her whole set and was floored by how AMAZING she is live. The Patsy Cline and Alanis Morisette covers may have been my favorite performances of the night simply because it was her performing something I haven't already heard hundreds of times on my iPod.

Oh - and to the people who concentrate more on the fact that she's gained some weight than her ridiculous singing abilities: you are what is wrong with the music industry. Just sayin.

I'm not kidding when I say that The Aggrolites are one of my favorite bands of all time. I will never fight my way to the front of the stage or dance at any shows, but that's what I'm doing when these guys play. The music is always incredible, the band puts on a great show, and the energy in the room is high.

DC9 was probably the smallest venue I've ever seen them play, but have to say that the venue is awesome. The drinks are strong, the bartender is friendly, the food is good, they play great music at the bar, and they OBVIOUSLY bring in some amazing bands!

Although The Ottobar is an great venue where one can see many amazing bands, I've decided as a photographer who shoots only with available lighting, that it's a awful place to shoot a live performance.

Regardless...

The Casualties, a band I have known and loved for a long, long time, are back out on the road and played their first show in a while in Baltimore. As always, they kicked ass. They are out on the road through July 4th. Check to see if they're coming through your town! Their new album, WE ARE ALL WE HAVE, is due out August 25th on SideOneDummy.

I just wish I had some pictures that were as great as their performance, but the dark red lighting just wouldn't allow it.

If you are familiar with Steve Soto, you've probably heard the buzz about his solo project Steve Soto and the Twisted Hearts. The buzz is true. They ARE awesome! Steve has lined up an incredibly talented bunch of musicians for this project and they've already put out 2 CDs. This is their first tour - and John Doe of X personally requested that they support them.

I caught their shows at the 9:30 in DC (where, by-the-way, we discovered they have the best cupcakes in the world) and The Ram's Head in Baltimore. Both shows were great. Be sure to check them out!

The Germs

I haven't been shooting as frequently as usual because I've been waking up at 5am to get to a day job, but have many, many exciting shows coming up in the near future. For now I'm going to be posting some of my older photos. Hopefully I'll be landing a permanent position sometime in the near future so I can move into the city and get rid of the hellish 3 hour daily commute - freeing up my time to get to more shows!

Since the Germs reformed I shot pretty much every show they've played within an hour of Hollywood. The photo above will be used by the El Rey in Los Angeles for giant posters promoting the Germs upcoming show on July 16. If you happen to see one of these posters, please try to snap a photo and send it to me. And if you live there you should be making plans to go to see them!

The Germs are heading out June 12 for a month long US tour with Krum Bums and will be playing Ottobar on July 4th! I'll be there snapping away! All show dates can be found on MySpace.

Be sure to check out What We Do is Secret. The band worked very closely with the cast and crew to be sure that their story was told accurately. In-Home Child Portraits

Why, YES! I do take photos of children! I tested it out years ago with a musician friend's kids and realized I actually enjoy it.

I was at a Happy Hour a while back and one guy mentioned how he and his wife really don't like going to the typical mall photo studios. I said that I'd be willing to take my photo studio equipment to their house and take photos of the kids. We set up an appointment and here are some of the results.

The home setting is much comfortable for the kids. We were able to do "wardrobe changes" and take breaks whenever necessary. Another cool thing about the home setting was being able to use props that have special meaning to the family. These kids posed on the fire engine originally built for their dad by his father, with bears that were hand-crafted from grandma's fur coat that no one was interested in acquiring as a hand-me-down, and with their guinea pigs.

I have home appointments set up over the next 2 weeks and will be happy to schedule more in the MD/DC/VA areas. And if your babies are your animals... I do that, too!

The Taste of Chaos show at Ram's Head was great. The highlights for me were seeing Thursday (a band I've loved for a long time) and discovering the amazingness of Cancer Bats.

I also quite enjoyed Bring Me The Horizon... after I wasted about 2 minutes of my valuable "1st 3 songs" shooting time drying 1/2 a bottle of water off of my camera and making sure my equipment was still working. I'd like to make a statement/request to you water-slinging singers (yes, you, Bring Me The Horizon guy):

Rock Photographers are not the enemy. We get your images out to the press, your managers, your labels, and your sponsors. We help to promote your band. Most of us don't even make enough money shooting your bands to cover our photography expenses. We do this because we enjoy it. Sure, every career path has its risks. Our equipment is ridiculously expensive and we are well aware of the risk of getting kicked in the head by the crowd surfing kids, but you will never see ME making some dick move and risk ruining $3000 worth of YOUR stuff.

I know that sometimes outdoor shows are unbearably hot, and the kids love it when you throw water on them. I completely back this and know that there is a risk that I may get a drop or 2 on me in that situation, but last night I was soaked by a significant amount of water at 10pm in an climate-controlled, indoor venue. The audience was not dying of heat. I wasn't the only soaked photographer in that pit. The girl next to me was looking at me like "WHAT THE HELL?!"

At the very least, work on your aim. You're a good band and you have a LOT of fans. Remember this simple fact: when photographers like you they'll do whatever they can to help promote you.

Cradle of Filth, Satyricon, and Septic Flesh rocked Ram's Head Live Thursday night. I find this scene fascinating, I like watching, and LOVE shooting the bands of this genre. The crowd went crazy for all of the bands and everyone got a kick out of the one lonesome crowd surfer girl who must have passed through the crowd a minimum of 100 times.
